MURMURING murmuring and murmuring forever;
O silver threaded waters on thy way;
Why dost thou in thy falling never,
Why can no vast power bid thee stay?

As a silver line among the mountains,
As a flower of light falling from heaven,
O, thou mystic water of the fountains,
Tell us what the ages unto thee have given.

The water-fall answers, "I come from afar off,
My springs have risen on the far mountain's brow,
Seeking the ocean, toiling and toiling,
I never can rest, I must hasten e'en now.

"See where I have carved the vast pecipices,
For ages and ages I struggle still on,
And plunging anon amid many abysses,
I have fallen in darkness, the sun shines still on.

"Many places where often my waters have been,
And carved sweet places for the wild flowers to grow,
The roots of  the fir tree  murmurously lave,
And the wild birds here hasten, my song they well know.

"But oh! as the spirit must seek the eternal
By carving its way through the rocks of this earth,
And at last findeth rest on the bosom supernal,
The ocean from whence all life must have birth.

"I have risen in mists and in vapor afar off;
I come as a spirit back again to the earth,
And now the eternal absorbs and claims me,
I hasten to where all waters have birth."
